Songs, Hymns and Spirituals presents works from the rich musical heritage of
American culture. Folk songs from the Appalachian Mountains, songs from the
African-American tradition, settings of curious and inspirational poems by great
American poets, and straightforward traditional hymns interspersed with
sophisticated arrangements take the listener on a musical journey from the simple
to the sublime. A good portion of the program is devoted to the African-American
Spiritual, an art form which emerged from the adverse social and economic
conditions of enslavement.
